SAG-AFTRA COMMERCIALS DEPARTMENT TIPS & TOOLS: New Hair and Makeup Provisions

COMMERCIALS DEPARTMENT TIPS & TOOLS New Hair and Makeup Provisions

The 2022 Commercials Contract is the first SAG-AFTRA agreement to achieve Hair and Makeup equity provisions. Below are new contract terms to remember!

Auditions

● Performers shall not be asked to dye their hair, braid or unbraid their hair. For example, you cannot be asked to take your braids out or dye your hair blonde for an audition.

Virtual Auditions (self-taped or live remote)

● Performers shall not be asked to engage in multiple hair and/or makeup styling changes for the same audition. For example, you cannot be asked to show your hair down and also ask for an updo or flat ironing. For makeup, performers cannot be asked to have a dramatic, evening smokey eye and then ask to see your everyday makeup look. A photograph or headshot of a different look may be requested, if available.

Qualified Hair and Makeup Professionals

●  A producer will utilize only qualified hair stylists and makeup artists and provide the appropriate products for cutting and styling a performer’s hair and applying their makeup.

●  “Qualified” means hair stylists and makeup artists with proven ability and experience styling a variety of textures and styles (e.g. tight curls, curly, wavy, straight, tapered, braids, locs, twists, fades, locked hairstyles, etc.) and makeup artists who are experienced in working with diverse skin pigments and features. It also means they have the tools and equipment—appropriate styling products and tools (e.g. curling iron), and makeup products that can match any skin pigment.

●  If there is a concern about a hair and/or makeup artist, please call the union.
